Abre Los Ojos
"Abre los ojos" was remade in America as "Vanilla Sky". I thought "Abre los ojos" to be
a more personal movie than "Vanilla Sky". The story focused more on the characters than on
their wealth and social status. The lead character was still a shallow rich kid but he was played
as being more down to earth as opposed to Tom Cruise's narcissistic rendering. If you enjoyed
the story of "Vanilla Sky" but were turned off by the excessive self-centered Hollywood egos,
as I was, then "Abre los ojos" may be an enjoyable movie for you. If you thought the whole
story was stupid then avoid this version since the story is essentially identical. I enjoyed
Penélope Cruz's acting in this version better. She seemed to be a more sympathetic character.
An interesting scene, one played in both movies, is the one with the pictures on the refrigerator.
In this version they were of Sofia with family and friends. In the Hollywood version they were
of just Sofia. Who puts pictures on their refrigerator of themselves? Aren't the pictures there to
invoke memories of others not as self advertisement.
